I think as with most of the various TLDs, the value of it varies widely and a lot of it depends on how you plan to use it and how much time and money you're willing to put into it.

While the ccTLD is the most popular extension in some countries, in others it hasn't.  In some ways it seems like the majority of US Citizens are more ignorant of the nuances of the internet and truly don't tend to see beyond .com when they're inputing a url which can make it a risky choice if you're planning on building something on it and don't have the .com.  After all,you don't want to give someone else your traffic.

Personally, I think that as the rest of world is growing more comfortable with the choice of TLDs, the US will slowly follow suit.  Although some domains will have more value than others, I agree with Michael.  If you're going to invest, look at it as a long term investment and not a short term one.

Once again i've lost my answer because i did not sign in before i began to type.

I was saying : It is true that there as some .US domains which are not registered or maybe no longer registered, and some of them are not so bad. I think this is a strange matter of fact in such a wired country as the US, whereas here in Europe, all the relevant words in the European IDN are registered. Should you invest ? Step by step, unless you guy have no bottom pockets.

Re: Your original question about my opinion if .us are good investment:

Along the lines of what Brian said it depends on how long you want to hold them for.  I think they will turn out to be a decent long term investment.  If you want to invest in .us the right way your best bet would be to take a sum of money you are comfortable living without and acquire as many 'good' .us domain names for as cheaply as possible as your investment cash allows.  Register or renew them for six years, I believe you will be happy with your investment.

Registering .us today and selling them for a big return next year?  I question the true quality of the domains you are looking at.  Also, your return will depend on how active you are going to be in selling your domains.  Register 20 .us domains and then just put them on sedo or afternic I think you will be lucky to see a return in one year.

Are you referring to fresh, or aftermarket names?
I see alot of .us drops at godaddy, single words with limited interested. They close on avg of $100. On investment point of view, depends on type of returns and how long you plan to hold the domain for.

I think the .us tld has some good legs in terms of longevity. It is not going anywhere and for all the folks who poo-poo it, it is still one of the top ccTLDs in the marketplace.  THe real money is in developing the domain and not so much in flipping.
